Learning formats · comparison framework
Spanish apps vs live classes.
Compare the practice, feedback, schedule and full cost of each format against a task you actually want to do. There is no winner here, only better questions.
A decision framework, not a tested product ranking. No app or class has been hands-on tested for this page.
Framework comparison · no winner named
Decision summary: start with your task.
Think about what you want to do in real life, then compare every option with the same three questions. The answers depend on you, not on the product.
What do I want to say?
Choose one everyday exchange, such as introducing yourself or ordering a drink.
What help do I need?
Material to practise, someone to hear you speak, or both.
What can I commit?
Your available time each week and the total cost, renewals included.
No format is named the winner on this page. Each one may suit a different task, a different week and a different budget.
Practise with a seven-day plan.
The free 7 Day Spanish Starter Plan gives you seven short tasks, two dialogues and a tracker, about ten minutes a day. Open it on the web or download the 5-page PDF.
The complete plan is free and open. No account or email needed; an emailed copy is optional.
Compare what you will actually practise.
Use these questions for any app, class, tutor or workbook. Features and delivery differ by product and provider, so the answers have to come from the option in front of you.
| Dimension | Self-paced app practice | Live group or tutor sessions | Free workbook practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speaking task | What do you actually produce, beyond recognising an answer? | How much of each session is you speaking? | Does each day ask you to say phrases aloud and recall them? |
| Feedback | What response does the app give, and what are its stated limits? | Who gives feedback, on which task, and how much each? | You check yourself against the written answer; nobody hears you. |
| Scheduling | Which features are available on your plan and device? | What are the dates, time zone and attendance rules? | Whenever you like; you set the pace. |
| Practice routine | Can you revisit useful tasks and fit them into your day? | What practice is expected between sessions? | Is there a tracker or a plan for repeating hard phrases? |
| Content fit | Do the examples match your everyday situation? | Will the sessions cover the task you need? | Are the dialogues close to your real situation? |
| Access and terms | Which plan, renewal and cancellation rules apply? | Which group, payment, cancellation and access terms apply? | Can you download, print and keep it? |
These questions are not verified claims about a named app, class or tutor.
What each format may suit, and what it costs you.
These are general trade-offs to think through, not findings about any product.
Self-paced app.
May suit short, frequent practice at any time of day, and recognising words and phrases.
- Check how much open speaking it asks of you.
- Check what is free and what needs a subscription.
- Check whether its examples match your task.
Live group or tutor.
May suit learners who want a real person to hear them and reply to them in real time.
- Fixed times need to fit your week.
- A group shares speaking time; compare the price per hour of a group and a one-to-one tutor.
- Feedback scope varies; ask what you will get.
Free workbook.
May suit a first week of structured practice before you spend anything.
- No one hears you speak or corrects you.
- It needs you to set aside the time yourself.
- It covers a few starter situations, not everything.
Many learners combine formats. An app on the bus, a workbook role play at home and, later, a live session can each cover a different part of the same task. Choose the mix that fits your time and budget.
Keep the evidence visible.
A hands-on review needs a record of what was actually used and observed. A feature list or a provider’s description does not show that anyone completed a task with the product.
An app review record shows.
- The product, version and plan used.
- The actual tasks tried and what happened.
- The dates, the device and links to the sources.
A class review record shows.
- The provider, format and group size.
- The task observed and the feedback given.
- The session date and what supports the account.
We have no such records yet: nothing on this page has been hands-on tested. See our Editorial Policy, the Duolingo checklist and the buyer guide.
Compare costs on the same dated basis.
Write down the full cost of each option on the same day, in the same currency, for the same length of time.
| Option | Cost basis to check | Time to check |
|---|---|---|
| App or app plan | Country, currency, upfront and recurring costs; when a free trial becomes a charge. | Minutes a day you will realistically use it. |
| Live class or course | Provider, number of sessions, total price and any required extras. | Session hours plus practice between sessions. |
| Free practice | No cost: the open starter plan and two free tools. | About ten minutes a day for seven days. |
- Include required extras, such as materials or a specific device.
- Check how long you keep access.
- Read the renewal and cancellation terms before starting any trial.
No cost-per-result or value ranking is assigned.
Try a useful task before deciding.
A first introduction from Day 1 of the free plan. Try it now, then note the kind of help you would want.
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Hola. | Hello. |
| Me llamo Ana. | My name is Ana. |
| ¿Cómo te llamas? | What is your name? |
Replace Ana with your name. Read aloud, cover the example and try again. ¿Cómo te llamas? uses familiar singular address (te). Did you want someone to reply? To correct you? Or just more phrases? That answer points to a format. Open the complete free lesson.
Questions for your decision.
Considering an app?
Check whether its actual tasks, feedback and access fit the way you want to practise, on the plan you would really use.
Considering live practice?
Check whether the schedule, group size and agreed feedback fit your situation and your week.

Commercial interest
Smart Learning Path proposes a Four-Week Conversation Course. Because it is our own planned offer, we have a commercial interest in this comparison, and the course is not an independently tested winner. Here is what is proposed:

- Eight one-hour live group sessions, two per week, for a group of 8 to 12 learners.
- Four feedback cycles totalling 30 minutes per learner; the planned toolkit included.
- About 15 minutes of daily practice plus two live hours each week.
Dates and a coach have not been confirmed, no platform has been chosen, and booking is not open.
