App checklist · not a review

Duolingo for adult beginners: what to check.

A checklist built from Duolingo's own public pages, focused on useful beginner tasks: speaking, asking for clarification and reviewing phrases. We have not tested the app, and we give it no score.

Facts about Duolingo come only from duolingo.com pages we opened on October 18, 2026. No rating or verdict is given.

Not hands-on tested

This is not a hands-on review. Nobody on our team has used Duolingo for this page, and we have no test record to show. What you will find here is a summary of what Duolingo says about itself, plus questions you can answer for yourself in a few days of use.

What Duolingo’s own pages say.

The Duolingo home page and Spanish course page describe short, bite-sized lessons with game-like features and reminders, and say the courses teach reading, writing, listening and speaking. The Spanish course page presents the course as free.

Free version and Super.

The Super page compares three options. As shown on October 18, 2026:

  • Same lessons for everyone. Duolingo’s help centre says, “We offer the same lesson content to all users.” It lists Super’s benefits as no ads, Unlimited Hearts, personalised practice on your mistakes and unlimited attempts at Legendary challenges. It also notes that Unlimited Hearts may be missing from Super for some users while Duolingo runs tests.
  • Super Family. The Super page describes a family option covering up to six Super accounts.
  • Free trial. The Super page offers a one-week free trial, with a reminder on day 5 and a charge on day 7 unless you cancel at least 24 hours before.
  • Renewal and cancellation. The help centre says subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled, that you manage a subscription on the platform where you started it, and that deleting the app or your account does not cancel it. After cancelling you keep Super features until the end of the period; past payments are not refunded or prorated.

Max.

The help centre says Duolingo Max includes everything in Super plus two AI-powered features: Roleplay, conversation practice with app characters in set scenarios, and Video Call with Lily, on-demand video calls with a Duolingo character. Both are listed for English speakers learning Spanish. Max is available only in the iOS and Android apps and cannot be bought on the web, and some AI features are not available in every course.

What an adult beginner may want to check.

Duolingo’s descriptions tell you what is offered. Only your own use tells you whether it helps with your task. Try the free version for a few days with these questions in mind.

Speaking practice.

How often do you say a full phrase aloud, rather than tap or type an answer? Which speaking features are on the plan you would actually use?

Clarification phrases.

Do lessons give you ways to ask someone to repeat or slow down? These matter in your first real exchanges.

Review.

How does the free version let you return to phrases you got wrong? On the Super page, mistakes review is listed under Super.

  • Do the example sentences match a situation I will really face?
  • Can I recall a phrase the next day without the app showing me options?
  • Which features I want are free, and which need Super or Max?
  • Do the reminders and game features help my routine, or distract from my task?

Whichever app you use, carry these clarification phrases with you. They come from our free Conversation Rescue Card and use polite singular address (usted).

¿Puede repetir, por favor? Can you repeat, please?
¿Qué significa esta palabra? What does this word mean?
Estoy aprendiendo español.I am learning Spanish.

Pair any app with real-conversation tasks.

An app can give you regular, short exposure. The free seven-day plan adds tasks where you speak a whole exchange from memory. You can use both side by side.

Use the app for new words.

Keep your usual short session. Note one phrase that fits your own situation.

Say a whole exchange aloud.

Use Day 1 to introduce yourself and Day 4 to order at a café: read both roles, cover them and say your part.

Practise asking for help.

Use Day 2 and the Rescue Card to rehearse No entiendo and ¿Puede hablar más despacio, por favor?

Recall on another day.

Use Day 6 to recall five phrases without looking, and repeat the ones you missed.

Practice dialogue · at a café

A: Un café, por favor. · B: ¿Algo más? · A: No entiendo. ¿Puede repetir, por favor? · B: ¿Algo más? · A: No, gracias.

A: A coffee, please. B: Anything else? A: I do not understand. Can you repeat, please? B: Anything else? A: No, thank you. An original practice dialogue, not a recorded conversation.

Check current costs and terms.

We do not quote Duolingo prices, because none of the pages we opened showed one. Check the latest details on Duolingo’s own pages, in the app or in your app store before starting a trial.
